Jan Vis was born and raised in Enkhuizen, Holland, where he learned the seed business. After gaining years of experience, Jan relocated to Southern California and took a position as the International Sales Manager for Bodger Seeds
Over time, he played a crucial role in building and expanding the company's seed business. Following this success, Jan moved on to become the West Coast Seed Manager for Burpee Seeds. However, due to shifts in the market, Jan decided it was time to start his own seed distribution company.
Over the years, VIS Seed Company has grown tremendously, yet Ben and Hans have always upheld the four basic principles upon which the company was founded:
In the spring of 1985, Jan and his wife, Janna, founded Vis Seed Company, Inc. in Arcadia, California. The company quickly realized there was a strong demand for a service-oriented seed company in Southern California and the western United States.
As the business grew, their son Ben joined the company in 1987, followed by their other son Hans in 1988. By then, Vis Seed Company had become well known throughout the region as a trusted source of quality seeds. In 2015, Ben's son, Grant, also joined the family business, continuing the legacy. Another key addition to the team was Anna Sariol, who came on board in 2005.
